The USA can still become the greatest country in the world again.

Last week, I saw a video in which Jeff Daniels stated, "The USA is NOT the greatest country in the world anymore." (This it is a trailer to an HBO series.) But I thought Jeff was compelling … and he made me upset. I was angry, which caused me to study to find out if what Jeff spoke is true.

See the video at http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/JeffDaniels-AmericaNotAnymore.html  (4 min)

When I was a small boy (1945) the USA was the greatest country of the world. A lot has happened in the last 68 years, and a lot has been lost about the "greatest country of the world." I am grateful for the USA, our Greatest Country. There are some changes needed to restore our beloved country (I am
not talking about President Obama).

There are five undergirding principles which are basting together and sewn into the fabric for the strength of our country: 1. freedom, 2. health, 3. education, 4. prisoners, and 5. household income.
1. Freedom (not liberty) is a term to be defined. What is the difference between freedom and liberty? Today freedom and liberty are often used as synonyms. I believe that liberty is a legal term, which can become written into laws. Freedom is a personal choice. Freedom is not written in law.
The Fathers of our country used the term "liberty" when writing the Declaration of Independence, they were NOT writing about freedom. The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution were written to get the "liberty" as a LAW.

My Dad would say "you have freedom is to cut your hair, but your freedom does NOT allow you to cut your neighbor’s hair … without permission."

Some people think freedom is found in places of the world, which are still good, and other places are worse. Depending on how you think and view things, freedom where you live now can be seen as either good or bad. How can you measure the "freedom" in a country?

The Heritage Foundation has stated that "Freedom" has four courses of action that are measurable:
Rule of Law- means the liberty, which is applied to all citizens
Limited Government- Thomas Jefferson said "The best government is the smallest government."
Regulatory Efficiency- makes business, labor, and money with an assessment of price controls
Open Markets- encourages free trade

Hong Kong is #1, the USA is #10 in freedoms. (Heritage.org)
To become #1 again the world’s greatest country, the USA has to get control of the congress: senators and representatives. After World War II, the US Presidency was limited to two terms.
President Roosevelt had served for 12 years (3 terms), and was on his way to serving 16 years … if he had not died. The congress thought that Roosevelt would become a King.

Has Congress become an oligarchy (a group of semi-Kings)? Congress currently has 15 members who have been in congress for more than 36 years. Another seventeen with more than 36 years of service are still alive.

To end the oligarchy, congress should be limited to two terms (8 years) like that of the Presidency.

2. Health: USA is #49 (out of 193 countries) for life expectancy according to the World Health Organization. Japan is #1. To compare with Canada, Germany, and other countries view video below.

When we compare health quality in the USA to Canada or Japan, Canada and Japan have good health. We do not have good health despite the highest per capita healthcare spending. (WikiPedia.com) Chile and Cuba (#47, #48) experience the same quality of health as we do.

Regarding infant mortality, with death occurring at less than one year of age and not including abortions, Singapore is #1, and the USA is #34 (CIA World Factbook). Are large businesses killing our children? We have to help.

3. Education: Some people believe that the USA offers the "best of education." Yet America is #17 in education test scores. (USA math ranks #25) Finland is #1. (HuffingtonPost.com)

4. Prison: USA is #1 with number of incarcerations in prisons, with 716 incarcerations per 100,000 (World Prison Brief). Statistics for other countries per 100,000 people are: Great Britain-148, China-121, Canada-118, Switzerland-82, and India-30. How are we doing?

5. Income: USA is #1 for household dollars income. But, Norway and Switzerland have more median income than the USA. For median income, we are third, in the world. These incomes do not factor in cost of living in different geographic locations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income

The USA is slipping, unless: we control Congress, we stop inappropriate selling to our children, and we start changing our educational system. Can the USA become the greatest country again? The challenge is set before us, and the answer lies in our responses.
