Life should be a VIBRANT AND FULFILLING

Life is supposed to be a vibrant and a fulfilling experience.  The natural human response is being alive, full of curiosity, and wonder.  If you doubt this, spend a few hours with a one-year old child. The only thing that ever stands in the way of living like a baby is that person’s thinking.  Human nature is living in the present, not in the past or the future.  Fully assume the awareness in your body … that sparkling life you still sense deep within you.

Video:  http:www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/MusicAndLife-AlanWatts.html

Believe it or not there’s not actually that much that stands between you and living a sparkling life. In our modern life, what hinders our great plans is …

The Hidden Hamster Wheel.

Most people spend their lives running on a “Hidden Hamster Wheel.”   It stops us from having peace of mind.  It takes our feeling of well-being, and the kind of deeply fulfilling sparkling life we all desire. The “Hidden Hamster Wheel” is a false belief.  It is a belief that gets taught to us as children, and then it is reinforced throughout our lives.

A few hundred years ago, they believed that the earth was flat.  Their “Hidden Hamster Wheel” stopped them from exploring new lands- for fear of falling off the edge.

Now in 2013, the earth is still flat because of the influenced by the evening news, we put locks on our doors and install burglar alarms.  Our “Hidden Hamster Wheel” compels us to struggle.  We are unable to find the peace of mind, and persistent well-being that is our birthright. This “Hidden Hamster Wheel” stops us from creating the kind of joy and success we desire.

“I’ll be happy when this happens,” or “something occurs.” We say these things as if they make “common sense.”   Yet the miserable lives of countless celebrities and lottery winners demonstrate that it’s just not true (my grandfather committed suicide because of the Great Depression). In other words, our circumstances do not dictate our happiness. Never have-never will.

So stop chasing after that carrot you can never quite reach. You see, the more you put off being happy, the more familiar you get with the experience of striving, neediness, and “not-having.” What psychologists call “a game without end.”

  • I’ll feel secure when I save up enough to pay off my mortgage.
  • I’ll feel good about myself when I quit smoking.
  • I’ll feel good when I get a new job with a fair boss.

When I first introduce people to the idea of the “Hidden Hamster Wheel,” they say something like, “But if I didn’t have that belief, I wouldn’t be motivated to do anything”!

That statement is mere horse-pucky. You were born …NOT believing in the “Hidden Hamster Wheel.”
You were motivated to learn to talk, without predication, without the “Hidden Hamster Wheel.” You learned to walk, fall off a bicycle, and looked silly learning to dance.  You began to Braille your world … taking in all things so you could get the most out of life. You wanted to laugh and cry, go on daring adventures, fall in love, change the world ... without the “Hidden Hamster Wheel.”
When you say: “But if I didn’t have the Hidden Hamster Wheel, I wouldn’t be motivated to do anything” …you are creating a smokescreen, like a Tule fog that traps the car head lights. Most humans have a natural sense of wonder, curiosity.  We have the desire to explore the world around us, if we feel passionate about “something.”
Try some experiments.  Make a list of some of the more obvious ways you’ve been deferring happiness until now (really do it – write them down).
Here are some of the approaches I heard from people, and some of my answers:
  • I’ll feel good about myself when I lose 100 pounds. (If you do NOT feel good with 100 pounds, how can you lose 100 pounds?)
  • I’ll be fulfilled when I can stop doing this job and do work I really love.  (Describe the “love” for your ideal job.)
  • I’ll feel secure when I have a passive income stream of $50,000 a year.  (Have you started your new best seller book?)
  • I’ll be happy when I change my limiting beliefs.  (Is your hidden hamster wheel, one of your limiting beliefs?)
Now stop for a moment.  Think of all the things you’ve done, just because you liked the idea (without a Hidden Hamster Wheel).
Video:
http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/LifeIsAGameAndTheRules.html

For example, last month I did lots of things just because I wanted to.
  • Listened to “76 Trombones” from the Music Man (since the stroke, music jumbled in my ears).
  • Started hiking the “easy hills” in Quicksilver Park.
  • My wife and I have decided once a month to take a two day trip with the RV, and two weeks twice a year.
  • I have written a “not to do” list, which is as important as the “do” list.
Most Hidden Hamster Wheel rules are someone else’s need, not your own.   All you need to be happy … is to just follow your heart.   If not, you will fall off the edge of your world.

Be happy, healthy, wise, and abundance

The USA can still become the greatest country in the world again.

Last week, I saw a video in which Jeff Daniels stated, "The USA is NOT the greatest country in the world anymore." (This it is a trailer to an HBO series.) But I thought Jeff was compelling … and he made me upset. I was angry, which caused me to study to find out if what Jeff spoke is true.

See the video at http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/JeffDaniels-AmericaNotAnymore.html  (4 min)

When I was a small boy (1945) the USA was the greatest country of the world. A lot has happened in the last 68 years, and a lot has been lost about the "greatest country of the world." I am grateful for the USA, our Greatest Country. There are some changes needed to restore our beloved country (I am
not talking about President Obama).

There are five undergirding principles which are basting together and sewn into the fabric for the strength of our country: 1. freedom, 2. health, 3. education, 4. prisoners, and 5. household income.
1. Freedom (not liberty) is a term to be defined. What is the difference between freedom and liberty? Today freedom and liberty are often used as synonyms. I believe that liberty is a legal term, which can become written into laws. Freedom is a personal choice. Freedom is not written in law.
The Fathers of our country used the term "liberty" when writing the Declaration of Independence, they were NOT writing about freedom. The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution were written to get the "liberty" as a LAW.

My Dad would say "you have freedom is to cut your hair, but your freedom does NOT allow you to cut your neighbor’s hair … without permission."

Some people think freedom is found in places of the world, which are still good, and other places are worse. Depending on how you think and view things, freedom where you live now can be seen as either good or bad. How can you measure the "freedom" in a country?

The Heritage Foundation has stated that "Freedom" has four courses of action that are measurable:
Rule of Law- means the liberty, which is applied to all citizens
Limited Government- Thomas Jefferson said "The best government is the smallest government."
Regulatory Efficiency- makes business, labor, and money with an assessment of price controls
Open Markets- encourages free trade

Hong Kong is #1, the USA is #10 in freedoms. (Heritage.org)
To become #1 again the world’s greatest country, the USA has to get control of the congress: senators and representatives. After World War II, the US Presidency was limited to two terms.
President Roosevelt had served for 12 years (3 terms), and was on his way to serving 16 years … if he had not died. The congress thought that Roosevelt would become a King.

Has Congress become an oligarchy (a group of semi-Kings)? Congress currently has 15 members who have been in congress for more than 36 years. Another seventeen with more than 36 years of service are still alive.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_members_of_the_United_States_Congress_by_longevity_of_service

To end the oligarchy, congress should be limited to two terms (8 years) like that of the Presidency.

2. Health: USA is #49 (out of 193 countries) for life expectancy according to the World Health Organization. Japan is #1. To compare with Canada, Germany, and other countries view video below.

Video: http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/USA-HealthCareSystem.html (7min)

When we compare health quality in the USA to Canada or Japan, Canada and Japan have good health. We do not have good health despite the highest per capita healthcare spending. (WikiPedia.com) Chile and Cuba (#47, #48) experience the same quality of health as we do.

http://www.bloomberg.com/visual-data/best-and-worst/most-efficient-health-care-countries

Regarding infant mortality, with death occurring at less than one year of age and not including abortions, Singapore is #1, and the USA is #34 (CIA World Factbook). Are large businesses killing our children? We have to help.

Video: http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/Junk-FoodMarketersTargetOurKids.html
http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/USA-HealthCareSystem.html (6 min)

3. Education: Some people believe that the USA offers the "best of education." Yet America is #17 in education test scores. (USA math ranks #25) Finland is #1. (HuffingtonPost.com)

Video: http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/Finland-EducationSuccess.htmlhttp://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/Finland-EducationSuccess.html (7 min)

4. Prison: USA is #1 with number of incarcerations in prisons, with 716 incarcerations per 100,000 (World Prison Brief). Statistics for other countries per 100,000 people are: Great Britain-148, China-121, Canada-118, Switzerland-82, and India-30. How are we doing?

5. Income: USA is #1 for household dollars income. But, Norway and Switzerland have more median income than the USA. For median income, we are third, in the world. These incomes do not factor in cost of living in different geographic locations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income

The USA is slipping, unless: we control Congress, we stop inappropriate selling to our children, and we start changing our educational system. Can the USA become the greatest country again? The challenge is set before us, and the answer lies in our responses.

Eight Keys For Forming Business Habits

There eight principles that apply to form a new business habit, and they help other areas of a person’s life.  How you understand, and implement, each principle depends on where you are in the life cycle.

Students will see ways to enhance their education.  Employees will see ways to increase their value and subsequently increase their income.  Entrepreneurs will find the keys so enlightening that they will want to share them with everyone … which is what I do.

Eight Keys to Forming New Habits

1. Use your own stuff:  If you do not use your own products, it is like you are selling a horse, when in reality the prospect sees the old man.  (See the man on the horse, by seeing the old man’s nose as the horseman’s elbow.)

Zig Ziglar tells the story of a sales trainee who could not overcome the “too expensive” objection.  The trainee had not bought his own set of $1,200 waterless cookware because he believed he could not afford the pots and pans.  Using your own stuff allows you to share a personal experience, which will show a client that you love the product or service.
Similarly, I could not sell a RedOx Machine until AFTER I had created and used one long enough (a year) to experience an overt improvement in my health and well being.  As John Jollife, a business psychologist commented at a seminar I attended years ago, “Truth leaks.”

2. Sell some stuff: Everyone has something they want to sell AND a sale does not necessarily involve money or even bartering.  For example, the Grand Master chess player Kenneth Kirkland has to sell people on the value of learning to play chess in order to strengthen logic and focus.  The process of sharing personal knowledge and experience (not necessarily selling something for money) with others reinforces your belief in what you are selling or promoting.

Competitive chess is also a good example of the “old paradigm” of business (dog eat dog) because each player is intent on winning the game.  Each person wants the other person to lose.  In contrast, teaching someone (especially your own children) how to play chess is a “new paradigm” because the chess teacher is not intent on winning but really seeks a win-win … the teacher really wins when the student finally beats them.
3. Teach others #1 principle and #2 principles: This is intentional viral marketing, sometimes called “cloning.”  A grand master chess champion both plays chess and teaches chess.  He would like nothing more than having one of his protégés become a grand master, so the student becomes a teacher.

I have made three referral sales of RedOx Machines from three users of the machines (actually they did the whole sales presentation … their experience).

In “old paradigm” marketing like TV and print advertising, a coast to coast blitz would cost a $100 Million, with no guarantee of a single sale.  Based on studies of conventional advertising, a consumer has to see an ad at least 17 times before a sale even becomes potential.  Prior to 17 exposures, consumers do not instantly recognize the product.

In contrast, one friend telling another friend, “out-mouth-advertising” just has to happen once.  That is why “out-mouth-advertizing” is very efficient.
4. Find and use a coach: In “old paradigm” business, coaching primarily happened in large corporations.  In contrast to large corporations, small business coaching was minimal.

A small business owner who coached an employee would be concerned that the employee would use what he learned and start a small business … thereby becoming another competitor.

In the “new paradigm,” coaches abound (particularly in the online business community).   Coaches teach how to market a product, set up a webpage, refine your sales techniques, discover and correct limiting beliefs, ad infinitum.  Personal and/or business coaching is becoming one of the fasting growing businesses in the USA (hear Bob Proctor in http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP3/BobProctor-Coaching.html (6 min) talking about his coaches).

In the past decade I have had two coaches: One is a retired millionaire who lives on a ten acre mountain top estate near Redding, and the other is a general contractor who lives in Placerville.  The millionaire coached me on economics (he taught me that I did not see the gorilla in the team http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/ChangeBlind-Gorilla.html 2 min) and the contractor helped me with interpersonal skills.  Both are considered very dear friends, whose company I enjoy every chance I get around them.
5. Learn language of success: Language is a right brain phenomenon.  Brian Tracy refers to his car as his “University on Wheels.”  I listen constantly in my truck.  I recommend people listen to audio recordings by coaches every time they are in their car, or anywhere else where they can listen for even a few minutes.  I believe this so strongly that I give away over 100 audio CDs every year.

There are three phases to learning the language of success with audio CDs.  First, is when you can start a CD and recognize the speakers’ voice from among ten or fifty other speakers in your stable of coaches.  Second, is when you can start a CD at any point and instantly know what the speaker is going to address next.  Third, is when you are in a casual conversation with someone and something you learned on a coaching CD comes out of your mouth without any thought … just as if the idea were yours … because now it is.
6. Train your mind: Reading in general is a left brain activity.  We are taught the alphabet and the multiplication tables by reading them over and over until they become ingrained in our mind.  Reading books should be approached in the same vein.  A book should be read and re-read until the ideas are impressed, or imprinted, until the author’s thoughts become your thoughts … just as you automatically know the answer to “What is four times four?” without having to think about it.

Bob Proctor still reads Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” over and over.  He has carried a leather bound copy everywhere he goes … for forty years. I am in process of converting this book into an EZ format.

A multi-millionaire I met years ago told me that he has carried a dog eared copy of Albert Grey’s “The Common Denominator” for thirty years (printed in 1937).  He re-reads random portions of it whenever he has a few quite moments.  I made it easy reading on your phone. Click the link below for an EZ copy you can read on the screen in about ten minutes. http://www.symbiosis4u.us/eBooks/Common Denominator-EZ.pdf

Video is easier than reading a book, but ineffective for real learning.  Video is good to study people, how they move alone, non-verbal, and interpersonal movements.  Watch videos when you are tired of reading a book.
7. Attend events:  A “meet up” for entrepreneurs with five or twenty attendees is a mini-event.  A large event would have about 5,000 people.  Whether large or small, the purpose for any event is to allow like minded people to sharpen each others’ saws (to borrow an analogy from Covey’s Seven Habits).

Large events are hectic times with little opportunity for mutual saw sharpening.  An unexpected benefit from attending a large event is the “event after the event,” when like minded people break bread together and share what they have learned or experienced (saw sharpening) with their peers.

In contrast, peer sharing should be the emphasis of small venue events.  When I speak to small groups, I make it a point to involve the attendees in a conversation with me, and not deliver a lecture.

Some of my marketing associates are experimenting with a new format for events: a hybrid event.  For example, a hybrid event would be large event that is live in Southern California and streamed via the internet to other locales around the globe.  I could attend the large event on line while rubbing shoulders with about a dozen of my peers in a friend’s living room, as I would at a small event.

Hybrid events may be the wave of the future as they provide the left brain food of a large event with lectures and slide presentations, and the right brain food of camaraderie (saw sharpening) of a small event.  They also benefit those who learn best in a large event as well as those who learn best from a small event.
8. Make friends with five high achievers: Have you ever heard the expression, “In five years you will have the average income of the five people with whom you spend the most time.”  The five people with whom you spend the most time probably share similar beliefs about money, work ethics, education, fitness, etc.

If at least one of those five people is not at a place in life that you are envious of achieving, then you may want to consider adding a sixth person.  More than ten people is too many relationships, and are not “saw sharpening” relationships, just having fun.

As I wrote that sentence, I couldn’t help but recall the reverent tone of a young entrepreneur’s voice when he mentioned his friendship with Guy Kawasaki.  Imagine the impact on this young man’s life if he were to have FIVE Guy Kawasakis with whom he rubbed shoulders most days.  Now that would be a “saw sharpening” experience, nonpareil.

Be happy, healthy, wealthy, and wise,

Tom Van Drielen

What questions you ask your potential SPOUSE ... or JOB!

What questions would you ask your potential spouse… or the same questions about The Ideal Job?

Have you ever thought about founding your ideal life mate?  You had a lot of questions before the “I do” which happens.  Have you ever thought that your ideal life mate, could you ask the questions for finding an ideal job?

You probably thought about these two questions, life mate or ideal job, are opposites?  You found about this job, like many people …. you left school, and got the first job to find.  Or, the last job finished, and someone said you would be to work with “here.”

My middle daughter graduated with San Jose University (she is 44 years of age, and has a 3.65 grade).  I asked her, “What are working to do, now that school is finished?”  She did not know what to do.  She felt her too long to just find a job, she wanted a long time job, with enough money, and with good values.  She wanted the Ideal Job.

See “Golden Rules by Steve Job” (2 minutes) at http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/GoldenRules-SteveJobs.html

I asked her about her “potential” husband?  She had questions that she would ask a potential husband … about 100+ questions.  She wanted him to good children, a good income, good looking, loves dancing and hiking, like talking, and etc, etc., etc.

I asked, “Could you have similar questions you could ask about your new husband and your new job?”   She and I asked for four questions which she could inquire as a “potential” husband, or a “potential” job.

1a) Souse: Are you focusing on his “Money” or your “Lack of Money.”  He is who he is really, not just his money, position, or family.  If he becomes poor, grey, and old, will you love him.

If he did not change one bit, you’d be happy to be with him for the rest of your life.  (Remember this is a “potential” husband, not reality, before most people will change.)

1b) Job: You are focusing on an ideal job.  You need for money, after the low money for school.  When the unemployment is run out after your last job, or/and credit cards are maxed out,  are you just looking for money or the ideal job?  Or are you still looking the “ideal job,” to work with fervor, until till you are seventy-five years old (when starts retirement for social security)?

2a) Spouse: Are you good enough for him?  You know he is just for you... so does he feels the same to you … right now. Does he adores you and is awed by your presence (even in the morning before she brushes her teeth). He notices you are smart, sexy, and fun to be.  You feel treasured and safe with him.

2b) Job: Are you better than the company?  Would you be embarrassed with friends, or parents, went into the office?  Are you uncomfortable with my workers or bosses?  Are you treasured as a employee, not an unknown name on the weekly paycheck.  This video (3 minutes) about some interviewers who were unexpected http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/BelieveYourself2Sing.html

3a) Spouse: You and he may dis-agree, without quarrelling.  At my grandson’s wedding, I spoke that arguments are good … if you based each of your values.  Do not argument because of someone’s random thoughts.  How to arguments ONLY for values?

Money is the greatest quarreling, of couples arguments.  Money is a “random” because it a fiat, not real.  The value of money is only after you change your money to something you want. Your spouse might want a sports car.  Is it the sports car to the way you feel when driving a sport car?  The spouse should not argument the sports car, instead finding to have a similar feeling from the sports car?

3b) Job: Do your best to be fair. You admit when you’re wrong, you listen to each other (bosses do not listening), you acknowledge one another’s good points.  You apologize when you cross lines. It’s not that you have to be perfect, but if this company is “Your Ideal Job,” then you are at least trying to make your conflict work for your relationship rather than against it. Part of your mutual clear intention is to learn from your conflicts and grow stronger as the company.

4a) Spouse: He wants the same type of relationship that you do.  Compatibility really is key when it comes to creating a deep and lasting connection between two people. Of course, the two of you are not twins, and you’ll be different in a lot of ways.

Ask your spouse to list the fifty most important values, or beliefs.  If your three top value is not listed on the “potential spouse” top ten list, that will be lot of quarreling … because they have the different values.  And you values will change as they age, after a trauma, .

My wife (Martha) and I  have exactly the top three values (spiritual, health, family) out of fifty values.  I enjoy climbing rocks and nature (10 item on my values), and Martha does not.  But she likes Nature (15 item on her values), and watches (praying) as I climb … without a rope.

4b) Job: Most company has a “persona” that fits the company.  Google is different that Yahoo “persona.”  HP is different than the IBM “persona” (before IBM sold their personal computers to China).  Opposites may attract, but they rarely make for a good long-term relationship.  What is the “persona” for the future your job?

During the Vietnam war (about 1962), I was working for a company that made agricultural sprayer for airplanes.  When the company got a million dollar contract to build the “Operation Trail Dust” to spray herbicide on Vietnam jungles, I had to find a new job.  I could not support for herbicides (Agent Orange) on humans.

What question would you asked about your next job?  Most employees work about five or ten years before they found a new job, or the company asks you find a new job (about 80% new companies will die in four years). See video (5 minutes) http://www.symbiosis4u.us/MP4/CurrencyOfFuture2.html

Or are you comfortable, with a seventy-five years toward retirement on social in-security?

If you are not married, what questions would you asked about your “potential spouse.”

If fifty percent of married couples, split the sheet.  Before they shred the sheets, ask both is you want to determine the values.  Might be to find what we got married again … or found … why they never should may been married.
